Comparative Literature and Culture
‘It is only by way of comparison that we
know the truth precisely’.
— Descartes, Regulæ ad directionem
ingenii
The creation and reception of literature
is a communal activity: it traverses
cultures, languages, social boundaries
and national borders. It confronts us at
each moment with visions of what is
unknown to us, with what is
fundamentally other. Comparative
Literature is the study of literary and
cultural texts at such borders and
crossroads, between languages, cultures,
eras, genres, artistic and scientific
disciplines (music, visual and
theatrical arts, and the hard sciences).
Queen Mary, University of London,
situated in East London’s Mile End, is a
college whose staff and student body
represent great social, national and
economic diversity. If comparison is
truly a fundamental aspect of the way we
come to know the world, Comparative
Literature at Queen Mary takes such
diversity as the starting point of the
study of literature in the contemporary
world.
The department of Comparative Literature
in the School of Languages, Linguistics
and Film is a young and dynamic
department that offers a range of
innovative and highly popular
undergraduate and now postgraduate
programmes, from single honours
Comparative Literature to joint honours
combinations with History,
Film,
Linguistics,
or one of the following languages: French,
German,
Iberian
and
Latin
American Studies or Russian.
