Facilities in the Department of Film Studies
If you choose to study Film Studies at Queen Mary you will have access to a large range of professional and broadcast-standard production and post-production equipment.
After training workshops during the first few weeks of the semester students are free to select and borrow the equipment they need to complete their productions. This includes over 30 HDV and DV cameras. For lighting there are ‘Red Head’ and Arri Blonde portable lighting kits with reflectors, gels, diffusers and softboxes. Our store also holds digital audio recorders, Sennheiser microphones and windjammers, Steadicam, dollys with tracks, jibs, LCD field monitors and DSLR digital stills cameras.
During production students can take advantage of our blacked-out film studio which has a sprung floor and lighting grid with desk. This is in addition to the brand new purpose built film and drama studio that will open in 2011.
Once shot, productions are edited on one of our 16 Mac Pro workstations spread across two large edit suites. These are installed with Final Cut Studio 2 and have external monitors and HDV tape decks. All machines are also networked and linked to our industry-standard central storage server. This 16TB raid array allows students to digitise to and edit from any one of the workstations with a unique password. This means that post-production is faster, easier and more secure.
For professional audio recording and post-production we also have a sound-proofed recording studio with ‘ProTools’ which can be used for recording voice over, music and sound effects.
