Mile End Films is Queen Mary’s very own in-house film production unit. It offers a unique opportunity for students who are graduating from Film Studies at both undergraduate and postgraduate level.
Established by Assistant Technical Director for Film Studies, Athena Mandis, in September 2009, the unit harnesses the best of the Film Department’s graduate talent in order to offer high-quality video solutions for, both, internal and external clientele.
Having already delivered outstanding web-content for Queen Mary’s QUEDOS initiative, in the shape of two short promotional films, and an exciting short documentary for AiR Project, a Queen Mary based Artist in Residence scheme, Mile End Films has quickly established itself as a trusted provider of cutting edge promotional content.
In the summer of 2009, the unit also produced its first short fiction film, 'Fly Away' (16mm, 10mins). The film is currently being considered by a number of festivals in the UK, Europe and North America.
Mile End Film’s recent acquisition of a three-year project from UK Sport to follow up-and-coming British Olympic athletes as they journey towards London 2012 and Rio 2016 highlights the exceptional growth of this production unit. Shooting for this documentary project began in January 2010 and will run right up to the London 2012 games.
Mile End Films has also built strong industry links with two high-profile production companies, Brassneck TV and Mandrake Films. These links allow our graduates to experience working alongside established broadcast professionals.
Mandrake Films is the home of cutting edge factual and multi media content for television, online broadcast and theatrical release, using a wide network of collaborators and co-production partners.
Brassneck TV is one of Britain’s most exciting independent production companies, with a team responsible for award winning programming for UK and US broadcasters. The partnership with Queen Mary can offer fantastic opportunities to graduates to gain industry experience after finishing their degree.
