There has been a resurgence of interest in early medieval Spain among scholars working in the United Kingdom. The vibrancy and richness of the surviving source materials offer scholars unique opportunities and at the same time present distinctive methodological problems. The seven essays collected in this multi-disciplinary volume provide new insights into the period from the Visigothic monarchy to the Christian kingdoms of the tenth century and later. The authors consider a variety of sources – linguistic evidence, historiographical and literary works, charters, archaeology, and visual imagery – to illuminate the cultural activity of the Visigothic clergy; to trace economic exchanges and social structures in the Christian kingdoms of the tenth century; and to explore expressions of exile and loss in post-conquest Iberia. The collection is foregrounded by an analysis of encounters between Frankia and Al-Andalus that raises questions about contemporary identities and current interpretations of the past.
