The following sites have been selected by members of the Department as being helpful supplements to Spanish language work at various levels. (The Department cannot, of course, vouch for their accuracy.)
On-line courses
- The BBC Languages (Spanish) site has attractive and informative material and exercises at all levels from beginners to A2. At the beginners' level, Spanish Steps has illustrated sound files, vocabulary and grammar relating to basic situations; at an intermediate level, El Mensual has authentic recorded material with a wide range of on-line exercises.
On-line exercises
- Spanish Proficiency Exercises from the University of Texas at Austin offer a number of short video interviews with transcriptions and accompanying vocabulary and grammar notes.
- Ursinus College provides a useful set of self-check exercises.
- There are some attractive and useful Spanish Grammar Exercises by Barbara Kuczun Nelson at http://www.colby.edu/personal/b/bknelson/exercises/.
Dictionaries
- The dictionary of the Real Academia Española (a drop-down box link can be installed in your internet browser).
- WordReference features the Espasa dictionaries (bilingual, monolingual, synonyms) and an interesting translators' discussion forum.
Translation
- The Aula de prácticas de traducción from the Instituto Cervantes offers commentary on the translation of individual sentences from English to Spanish and a comparison of the translations submitted.
Newspapers
- A comprehensive directory of on-line newspapers and magazines in Spanish can be found at http://www.el-castellano.com/prensa.html.
Television
- TV in Spanish can be watched direct in the College Library and (coming soon) in Laboratory 3 of the Language Centre. Some stations also have on-line broadcasts (for which you usually need Real Player - this is not currently available on the College student service, but can be installed free on your own computer). Radio
- A comprehensive directory of Spanish-language radio stations can be found at http://www.el-castellano.com/radios.html and at http://www.e-spanyol.hu/en/radio.php (the latter provides direct links to streaming audio and a WinAmp playlist).
Other
- The Grupo de Estructuras de Datos y Linguistica Computacional at the Universidad de Las Palmas de Gran Canaria have various on-line linguistic tools, including a verb conjugator and a program for deriving adjectives from nouns, verbs from adjectives, etc.
