Introduction
Language is central to almost all aspects of human life: communicating with each other; thinking and reasoning; creating social relations; passing on the thoughts, ideas and discoveries of the past to future generations. Linguistics is simply the study of language in all of its aspects.
Here at Queen Mary, we have a special focus on the grammatical, meaning-related and sound structures of language in general, and on the way that people actually use language in different kinds of situations. Each of these different approaches complements the other. The Department is consistently ranked within the top three in the UK for teaching and research.

Undergraduate degree courses
The Department offers a number of degrees at undergraduate level. You can study a Modern Language and Linguistics (e.g. French and Linguistics, Hispanic Studies and Linguistics) or Comparative Literature and Linguistics. We also offer two programmes combining the study of English with Linguistics: English Literature and Linguistics, which involves both English Language and English Literature; and English Language and Linguistics, which concentrates on the study of the English language. For further information on our undergraduate courses, including admissions requirements, see this page.
Postgraduate programmes
We do not at the moment offer an MA in Linguistics, but all the teaching staff offer PhD supervision in their fields.
