Introduction

This page is for students currently completing a Master's or Doctoral degree outside the UK, requiring short-term visiting student status overseas to obtain supervision of their dissertation or thesis.

This page is not intended for students who wish to apply for a full degree in the School of Languages, Linguistics and Film. If you wish to apply for an MA or PhD, please refer to our postgraduate studies page.

If you wish to come to the School of Languages, Linguistics and Film to complete your dissertation or thesis as a Visiting Student you will need to apply to the College for a place as a Research Associate Student.

How to apply

In the first instance, prior to making an formal application, you should consult an appropriate member of research staff with whom you would like to work, or the appropriate Departmental Research Co-ordinator for your subject area, to request an invitation, agree the duration of your visit and when you can start.

Research associates can begin at specific times throughout the academic year depending on the month in which you intend to visit. Enrolment dates are normally at the beginning of each month and are shown in detail on the College's enrolment page for postgraduate research students.

If supervision is offered to you, you will then need to apply by completing the standard postgraduate application form which is available in two formats:

Some sections of the application form may not be applicable to you and will not need to be completed. However, you must, at least, provide details of your current degree programme and your potential supervisor may also require references and any other supporting documents.

The application form also has a Course Details/Study by Research section, where the Area of Study is shown as Research Associate, followed by items that you must complete with the following information:

• Name of supervisor
• Start date (enter the date you wish to start)
• Full/part time (enter duration of visit: number of months)

Please return your completed application form to the Admissions and Recruitment Office to the address given on the application form or via email attachment to admissions@qmul.ac.uk.

Please allow at least two weeks for your application to be processed before your intended arrival.

If your application is accepted, you will receive joining and enrolment instructions which will allow you to obtain a student identification card and access to facilities at Queen Mary.

Please be aware that you we cannot offer College accommodation to visiting students. Own arrangments will need to be made.

If you are permitted to attend any classes, please be aware that visiting students cannot receive formal assessment or credit.

A fee of £100 per supervised month will be charged, to be paid upon enrolment.
