European Studies offers exciting opportunities for research at Queen Mary, in particular to those wishing to focus on interdisciplinary and/or comparative projects or projects in cultural studies. Numerous such projects are underway at present, both amongst staff and graduate students. Existing research at the School of Languages, Linguistics and Film covers a range of topics that fall within the broad aegis of European Studies, combining a focus on European languages, literatures, cultures and film, and European thought. These include comparative projects between two languages or cultures, two or more media (such as literature and film) or projects that draw across disciplines, such as philosophy and literature or linguistics and culture. There are also numerous projects underway that explore contact between Europe and other parts of the world, thereby assessing the impact of European thought and culture beyond Europe's geographical boundaries.
The growth of Film Studies and Philosophy at Queen Mary reinforces the scope for graduate work in European Studies. Existing possibilities for collaboration with other departments, such as Politics, History or Law, also pave the way for cutting edge research in the field.
Staff whose research takes an interdisciplinary or comparative approach include:
- Elza Adamowicz
- Trevor Dadson
- Rüdiger Görner
- Michael Moriarty
- Parvati Nair
- Leonard Olschner
- Elizabeth Saxton
Current and recent graduate research which relates to European Studies includes theses on: Film and Gender, Italian/British cinema, Philosophy and Art, Bilingualism, Soviet/Cuban cinema, European thought, France and Germany, the European Union/South Africa, Basque/Castilian, Spain and England.
