Red Zion by Evgeny Tsymbal

An exclusive preview screening by Evgeny Tsymbal, a BAFTA award-winning Russian filmmaker, took place at Queen Mary, University of London on Tuesday 5 December at 6.30pm.

Evgeny Tsymbal has been a visiting lecturer at Queen Mary’s Department of Russian for the past five years. His new film, Red Zion, is a documentary about the Jewish Homeland in the Crimea in 1920s Soviet Russia.

Tsymbal has received numerous awards for his films, including a BAFTA, for Defence Counsel Sedov (1988), a Russian Oscar (NIKA), and the prize for best documentary at this year’s Honfleur Film Festival for Dziga Vertov and his Brothers (2002).

Dr Jeremy Hicks, from Queen Mary’s School of Languages, Linguistics and Film, was in conversation with Tsymbal after the screening. Dr Hicks said: “The films of Evgeny Tsymbal combine acute historical insight with exhilarating editing. Red Zion ranks among his best work and this was a unique opportunity to see and discuss it with the director.”
