My published work has been mainly on
Spanish cinema (especially
Buñuel and Almodóvar),
Hollywood (especially the Musical,
Romantic Comedy, and the Biblical
Epic), and British cinema (especially
Carol Reed). Most recently, I have
published articles on Catherine
Deneuve, the two versions of The
Quiet American (Mankiewicz,
1958 and Philip Noyce, 2002). I
curated the 2006 NFT Carol Reed
season, and co-curated (with Charles
Drazin) the 2008 BFI Southbank David
Lean season.
I am currently writing a book for Blackwell’s on Top Hat (Mark Sandrich, 1935), and have been commissioned to write articles on Carlos Saura’s 1998 film Tango (the tango, like the music of Cole Porter, Rodgers and Hart, Irving Berlin, Johnny Mercer, and Richard Wagner, is one of my passions), on the films of José Luis Borau, and on the Fred Astaire/Leslie Caron musical, Daddy Long Legs (Jean Negulesco, 1955).
I would be prepared to supervise dissertations on any of the topics mentioned above.
