Current research projects

A biography of Paul Celan is in preparation. A book-length study on A Poetics of Time: History and Non-Synchronous Consciousness in German Lyric Poetry from Post-Duino Rilke to the Mature Celan, turns to the simultaneity of different levels of historical consciousness in texts of the period 1926-1956 and attempts to understand the mechanisms of de-individualised speech under historical pressures. Another, Verhinderte Heimkehr: Zu einem lyrischen Motiv im 20. Jahrhundert, looks at an intensely recurring theme of impossible homecoming in the poetry of this century. Further research is concerned with G.C. Lichtenberg’s writings on London.

Two German-language anthologies are in progress, one a documentation of the history and poetics of translation by German, Austrian and Swiss writers and philosophers, with a substantial introduction; the second a selection of poems written in and on London by poets writing in German.
