The Year Abroad is a valuable experience for all students of Portuguese. Not only does it increase our students’ employment chances significantly, it is also regarded by all our students as a great step forward in their personal development.
For their Year Abroad (or part of their year abroad for two-language students), students who have Portuguese in their degree title at Queen Mary can choose between:
- ERASMUS Study Placement at one of our partner universities in a Portuguese -speaking country,
- ERASMUS Work Placement in a Portuguese-speaking country,
- Independent Studies in a Portuguese-speaking country,
- Independent Work Placement in a Portuguese-speaking country.
The European University Exchange Programme: ERASMUS Study Placement in a Portuguese-speaking country
All students regardless of nationality or fee status are eligible to participate in the EU-financed ERASMUS Exchange Programme.
The Sector of Portuguese of the Department of Iberian and Latin American Studies has 3 partner universities where our students can study for either one academic year, i.e. nine months, or one semester if they are splitting their Year Abroad. There is 1 partner university in Portugal and 2 in Brazil.
PUC Rio de Janeiro (not part of the ERASMUS Exchange Programme)
ERASMUS Work Placement in a Portuguese-speaking country
All students regardless of nationality or fee status are eligible to participate in the EU-financed ERASMUS work scheme if they wish to gain work experience by completing a work placement (paid or unpaid) in a Portuguese-speaking country in the European Union.
The Year Abroad programme for students of Portuguese was introduced in 2010/11 and the School has received placement offers from employers such as:
- Companhia Carris de Ferro de Lisboa
- British-Portuguese Chamber of Commerce
- Catholic University of Portugal in Porto
Independent Studies in a Portuguese-speaking country
Students who wish to study independently, i.e. outside the ERASMUS Exchange Programme, can of course do so in any Portuguese-speaking country. This option is for those who: i) wish to study at a university within the European Union that we do not have an ERASMUS agreement with or ii) wish to study at a university outside the European Union. Students on independent studies placements will be asked to attend classes and sit examinations following the same rules that apply to our ERASMUS exchange students.
Students who wish to pursue this option must discuss their choice of institution and programme with the Year Abroad Co-ordinator for Portuguese. Once the Year Abroad Co-ordinator for Portuguese has validated their placement and once the assessment procedures have been clearly established, students will have to apply to the institution they are interested in independently. The SLLF can provide documents to support their application if this is required.
Independent Work Placement in a Portuguese-speaking country
Students who wish to complete a work placement in a Portuguese-speaking country outside the European Union are invited to do so. For further information please see Work Placements.
