Josep-Anton Fernàndez's research interests are in modern Catalan literature, culture, film and television, and sociolinguistics; cultural studies; lesbian and gay studies. He is currently completing a book on issues of legitimation, identity and cultural politics in contemporary Catalonia (1976-2000). This project aims at elucidating how Catalan culture has adapted its discourses, strategies and practices to the new contexts of the Restoration of the constitutional monarchy and the related social changes, to the consequences of globalisation, and to its own redefinition as a market. The book argues that contemporary Catalan culture is defined by a crisis of cultural models that is characteristically postmodern, in that it encompasses a crisis of its legitimation discourses, of its mechanisms for the production of aesthetic and literary value, and of the discourses of Catalan identity. The study focuses on a wide variety of texts, including political writing, cultural and literary criticism, narrative fiction, film, television, advertising and cultural phenomena (such as the institution of literary prizes, or the art- and book- vending machines).
